The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon is a gift of Thomas Rees, publisher of Illinois State Register from 1881 until his death in 1933. After an extended tour of carillons in The Low Countries, Rees determined to provide the funds for the building of a large concert carillon in Springfield. As a result of this generosity, the Rees Memorial Carillon is one of largest and finest of the World’s Carillons.
In 1978 the Rees Carillon’s transmission system was updates, and in 1987 the instrument underwent a major renovation, including a new transition system installed for the brass bells. In 1993, the Rees Carillon was closed for an extensive structural renovation. In February, 2000, to commemorate the centenary of the Springfield Park District, a new 8,800 pound, B-flat bell was added to the 66 original bells of the Rees Carillon. Subsequent to this addition, a World Standard Strauss-Verdin keyboard was installed. Since its dedication on June 23, 1962, the Rees Memorial Carillon has attracted innumerable tourists from nearly every locale.
