The Springfield Park District has over thirty picnic areas and shelters throughout our parks located near playgrounds and ample green space. A permit is required for group picnics of 15 or more persons, so plan to get a permit for your next gathering, birthday party, picnic or family event!

*Acceptance of Park Permits will be closed at 12pm on Wednesday for the upcoming weekend. All shelters become first come first serve at that time. All park shelters, features, and gardens are non-refundable/ non-transferable rain or shine.

Picnic Shelter Renter Conditions

BASIC & AMENITY SHELTERS

All park shelters are available at no charge on a first come, first serve basis. However, park shelters can be reserved for a fee, based on availability, for specific dates and times. To secure your park permit, please view our shelters following the link below.

BOOK SHELTER RESERVATIONS

Permit time Blocks
There are three options for time slots:

  • 10:00am - 4:00pm - AM 1/2 Day
  • 4:00pm - 10:00pm - PM 1/2 Day
  • 10:00am - 10:00pm - FULL DAY

*Fees are subject to change, so check availability and pricing at the online reservation portal. In addition to fees, there are rules and conditions for using the picnic shelters. Please see the picnic rules and conditions.

*Fees and Permit Time Blocks may differ at Southwind Park and Comer Cox Park than displayed above.

Walks, Runs, or Events

While you may picnic at any of our parks for free, organizers who plan special events on Park District property must get written approval from the Springfield Park District prior to the event. 

Walk Packages Include:

  • United State Track and Field Certified race courses (2mile and 5K) *excluding Southwind Park
  • Marked courses with and accompanying race course map *excluding Southwind Park
  • Barricades for large walks to prevent vehicular traffic *excluding Southwind Park and Lincoln Park
  • Exclusive use of the picnic shelter during the event *excluding Southwind Park

Please Note: Extra Tables, Trash Cans and a dumpster may be added for additional fees. 
Events with more than 100 participants expected will be required to rent portable restrooms at the event permittees expense.

General Reminders:

Electric Limits

The electrical limitation of our picnic sites and shelters are 20 amps each. It is your responsibility as a renter to know the amperage of the items you are plugging into these outlets and to not overload the circuits. We do not have staff on evenings or weekends who are available to come out and reset the breakers.

Age Restrictions

You must be 18 years or older to permit/rent a park shelter. See the documents folder for a list of important information and our full rental waiver requirements.

Amenity Shelters

*Amenity Shelters have more than one table, power, water and/or restrooms nearby. They typically rent for a higher permit fee than our Basic Shelters.
