TRY SOMETHING NEW.....
1. What is cyclocross?
“Cyclo-” implies this is an activity that involves a bike. “-Cross” suggests that you are going to go a-cross terrain and obstacles. So, how is this different from commuting? Rather than going from point A to point B, you, the Cat 4/5 beginner, are going to race around a 1.5 -2 mile plastic tape-defined loop for about 30 minutes. Grass, dirt, a little pavement, sand, and mud are standard terrain. Those in more advanced categories (Cat 1-3) race for 45 or 60 minutes.
2. Do I need a special bike?
No. Mountain bikes (without bar ends) work well. The lighter the better. Hybrid/fitness/touring bikes will suffice. Road bikes work best if they’re equipped with knobby tires and when the conditions are not too muddy.
3. You mentioned obstacles, am I going to have to climb a wall with my bike or pass through fields of barbwire in true Warrior Dash-style?
No, obstacles that may be encountered include but are not limited to: sand pits, mud pits, etc... Courses vary between venues which makes the sport quite amusing.
4. Do I have to be a young buck in tip top shape to compete?
Bucks, does, young, old, large and small can and do compete. There are age divisions for the older crew: Masters 35+, 45+, and 55+. Let’s be realistic here: fitness does help, but where fitness trails off, a strong sense of humor will get you to the finish.
5. Cyclocross bikes look a lot like road bikes. Is it safe to assume CX racing is similar to road racing?
No, this is a fairly poor comparison. Cyclocross races are shorter, no team is required, and the falls are far less disastrous than those experienced by beginner road racers. Both style of cycling races will yield a fantastic feeling of satisfaction upon finishing; however, you are going to have more fun before, during, and after a CX race.
6. What kind of atmosphere can I anticipate?
Festive. Think: cowbells, Hostess snack cakes, cheering, heckling, and happy people on bikes. It is a family friendly atmosphere.
