At the Springfield Park District, we believe that training, teamwork, and dedication can make all the difference — and this summer, that belief was powerfully reaffirmed.
We’re incredibly proud to recognize three of our own — Konnor Martin, Adam Gee, and Olivia Killion — who were recently honored with the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders. This prestigious award celebrates individuals who take swift and decisive action to save a life, and that’s exactly what these lifeguards did.
Last summer, while on duty during a lap swim session at the Nelson Center Outdoor Pool, they responded without hesitation when a 75-year-old swimmer went into cardiac distress. Thanks to their calm demeanor, quick response, and expertly performed CPR, the patron not only survived — he made a full recovery.
Their lifesaving efforts underscore the importance of high-quality training and preparation. Behind every successful rescue is a team of instructors and leaders who help make it possible. That’s why we’re also thrilled to share that one of our staff members received the Lifesaving Instructor Award from the American Red Cross — a special recognition for those who train and empower professional responders to perform at the highest level.
👏 A heartfelt thank-you goes out to Aquatics Manager Nate Merema and Aquatics Facility Program Supervisor Mike Lemke for their exceptional leadership and commitment to safety. Their ongoing support of our aquatics team is invaluable, and this recognition reflects their unwavering dedication.
These awards don’t just celebrate past actions — they highlight the critical role our lifeguards play every single day. We’re beyond grateful to have such a passionate and prepared team watching over our community.
